
Harriet Hawes Piper, 81 of Alexandria, passed away Friday, May 6, 2011. She was a founding member of the Inova Mount Vernon Hospital Auxiliary in 1976, where she also was the Gift shop Co-Chairman since 1978, was President of the Auxiliary for two terms. She was a member of the Southeast Fairfax Health Task Force since 2003 which assisted in stabilizing Inova Mount Vernon Hospital. Was recognized as a 2004 Lady Fairfax Honoree and President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation. She married Harold (Jack) Piper in 1951 and accompanied him and their family on various tours of duty with the U.S. Navy, including at the U.S. Embassy in Canberra, Australia. She served as the President of the Navy Wives Clubs on two occasions. She is preceded in death by her parents Ernest Basil Hawes and Catherine Marie McNamara Hawes. She graduated from Denison University in 1950. Earned a Master of Education degree at the University of New Mexico in 1951. She is survived by son Stephen and daughter-in-law, Rutha, of Alexandria, VA; granddaughter Caitlin and grandson Cameron; son David of Houston, TX; granddaughter Layne and grandson Jackson. A memorial service will be at a later date. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
