Harry Leo Carey It is with great sadness that the family of Harry Leo Carey announces his sudden passing. He was the beloved father of Brian (Meg) and Colleen Schmitt (Matthew); adored papa to Hope, Gabriella, Arianna & Harper; brother of Charles (Kathleen) and a cherished best friend and companion to Sherry Andersen. He is predeceased by his loving wife, Aurelia “Riz” Carey. A native of Washington DC, Harry Carey attended Gonzaga College High School (’63), followed by the University of Scranton (’67) and ultimately culminated with a law degree from Catholic University (’70). Harry was in Fair Housing throughout his 37 years of service at HUD, most recently serving as Associate General Counsel for Fair Housing. He was involved in the drafting of the provisions of the Fair Housing Amendments Act of 1988 and the development of the HUD Regulations implementing the Fair Housing Act. After retirement Harry taught at John Marshall University and continued to advise colleagues in the field of Civil Rights. Harry was known for his magnanimous heart. He was a role model to many. He never met a stranger that didn’t quickly become a friend. He will be sorely missed and forever loved by all. Funeral services will be held at St Aloysius Church in Washington DC on Saturday, August 3rd at 10am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Gonzaga College High School to benefit the Carey Family Scholarship. We ask that you please share a memory with the family below.
