James Carlin Allen, 88, of Alexandria, VA, died on September 28, 2011 following a courageous battle with kidney failure. His determination to carry on was an inspiration to all who knew him.
Born in Washington, DC, in 1923, he moved to Alexandria, VA, where he lived for most of his life. After valiantly serving his country as a Marine in the South Pacific during World War II, he returned home, started a family, and attended American University. After college, he fought tirelessly for workers' rights for many years as an executive in the Industrial Unions Department of the AFL-CIO until his retirement.
Carlin was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Anna P. Allen, of Alexandria, VA; sister, Virginia Young, of York, PA; and brother, Robert C. Haith, of Panama City, FL. He was a loving and supportive father to his daughter, Sharon, and son-in-law, Robert I’Anson, of Mason Neck, VA; son, James C. Allen, and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth, of Lake Ridge, VA; and son (deceased), Michael R. Allen, and daughter-in-law, Mary, of McLean, VA. Carlin was also the proud grandfather of five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
