

James was born at Fort Eustis, Virginia to Blanche Lavinia Calvert Dingeman and Ray Edward Dingeman on November 23, 1925. He was a graduate of the United States Military Academy (Class of 1948) and received a master’s degree in business administration from Syracuse University in 1960. He married Sylvia Jane Ives on June 11, 1960, in Syracuse, New York. He served in the US Army Infantry, was an Army Airborne Ranger, and was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was awarded the Silver Star, 5 Legions of Merit, and 21 Air Medals. He retired from the US Army, with the rank of Colonel, on July 31, 1978. As a retiree, he was highly involved with organizations related to West Point alumni and the 12th Cav and was appointed Honorary Colonel for the 12th Cavalry Regiment.
James is survived by his wife, Sylvia, and his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Visitation will be 4:00pm - 8:00pm on Friday May 1st, 2026 at Demaine Funeral Home located at 520 S. Washington St., Alexandria, Virginia.
Funeral services, and burial services held at Arlington National Cemetery, will be announced at a later date.
