Leslyn J Newsome

Leslyn Evangeline Newsome was born to Gloria and Leslie Johnson on the 1st of July 1949. In the town of DayShore Esequibo Guyana South America. She was their first child and was followed one year later by a baby brother Louis Jerome. Leslyn attended St John's primary school and St Josephʼs high. She was selected from High school to study nursing and midwifery at St Josephʼs Mercy hospital in George Town Guyana . There she obtained her bachelors degree in nursing and after graduation worked at the hospital until the the late 1970ʼs ,when she emigrated to the United States of America. Once in America Leslyn became a registered nurse and worked in many states across the county. In the late 1990's she met and Married Edward Newsome. She relocated to Virginia where they lived happily together. They travelled frequently and led an active social life. When Edward became ill Leslyn worked tirelessly to care for him ,until his passing in 2005. In 2008 after many years of paperwork and red tape Leslyn adopted her daughter Samantha from Guyana .They enjoyed hours doing mother daughter things together and when Samantha saw snow for the first time Leslyn was equally ,if not more so excited. Leslyn was very religious she attended church every Saturday and was active in her congregation. Cleanliness being next to Godliness...Leslyn has been called a cleaning ninja ,some were even prompted to clean vigorously prior to her arrival at their homes ,to avoid chastisement. Leslyn was old school and believed in a high standard of discipline and etiquette. She was also bold and blunt ,a tongue lashing from Leslyn meant she cared about you and wanted you to do better. Some of her happiest moments were Spent traveling, power walking along scenic trails, doing yoga playing music or trying a new recipe from one of her many cook books. She loved her family and close knit circle of friends. She was poised and sophisticated with an understated elegance. Heads turned when she walked into a room. She was kind ,loving ,bold and opinionated ,she did it her way. A sophisticated, intellectual fighter to the end. She has left to mourn: Her daughter Samantha, grand children ,Samara and Azaris .Her brother Louis, Aunts, Pearl, Iris Patricia, Olivia and Patricia Persaud, Her close cousin Cheryl who was with her as she fought her battle and finally got her wings. Close friends Sterling , Sylvia ,Geraldine, Beverly ,Carlotta, Melvina ,Zelda and numerous other relatives and friends. A funeral service for LESLYN will be held Friday, July 30, 2021 from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Demaine Funeral Home, 520 S. Washington St., Alexandria, VA 22314.
