Lillian Ruth Hannan, daughter of William F. Hannan Sr. and Lillian Ruth Lockwood, was born on September 16, 1928 and raised in Paducah, KY along with her twin brother, William F. Hannan Jr. and two older sisters, Patricia Hannan Sermersheim and Anna Louise Hannan. She attended Tillman High School in Paducah and after graduating from Saint Mary of the Woods College in Terre Haute, IN, traveled to Europe and the West Coast of the United States. She moved to Georgetown, Washington DC to work at Georgetown University, and it was there that she married William Irvin Jacob (Bill) of Louisville, KY. The couple lived at Wolf Trap Farm, currently the site of Wolf Trap Performing Arts Center.
As Bill’s Navy career moved them to Boston then back to the Washington Navy Yard, they settled into the Mount Vernon area of Virginia to raise their two children, William Hannan Jacob and Sara Louise Jacob. It was here that Lillian thrived, encouraging her children to pursue a plethora of interests, ensuring they were well traveled up and down the East Coast from Florida to Maine. Not interested in air travel, she insisted on traveling extensively via train and automobile on vacations, to sports, equestrian and music events and family reunions.
Her love of the outdoors, music and sports was quickly adopted by her children and passed along to her two Grandchildren, Melissa Ann Jacob and William Hannan Jacob Jr. Whether bird watching on her back porch, cheering at football games, horse shows or concerts, she kept her great sense of humor and energized those around her with her way of making everything more fun and memorable. She was a wonderful Wife, Mother and Grammy and will be greatly missed. Her generous, loving spirit and appreciation for the beauty of nature will undoubtedly live on through those that knew and loved her. She loved life and always encouraged those around her to “Take time to smell the roses”.
Lillian is survived by her son, Hannan Jacob (Cindy), daughter, Sara Rothwell (Rob), granddaughter, Melissa Ann Jacob, and grandson, William Hannan Jacob Jr.
