Therese Kibler Nichols died on October 11, 2013 in Alexandria, Virginia. She was born on September 26, 1925 in Java Center, New York, the only child of Michael and Mary (Wright) Kibler. After graduating from Arcade Central High School, she completed the World War II-era cadet-nursing program at Wyoming County Community Hospital School of Nursing receiving her RN degree in 1947. She had committed to enter the Navy, but was not called due to the war’s end. In 1948, she married Raymond C. Nichols of North Java, NY and worked at Thompkins County Memorial Hospital in Ithaca for four years while Raymond attended Cornell University. Subsequently, they lived in Bath, NY for 3yrs; Wolcott, NY for 29 years; Orlando, FL for 25 years and spent the last 2 years in Alexandria, VA. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in June 2013.
Therese chose taking care of her family over continuing her nursing career. She raised four children and took her widowed mother into her home. She was a devout and active member of the Catholic Church, particularly St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Wolcott, NY and spent many years working with Girl Scouts. She enjoyed camping, bird watching, cooking, playing solitaire and doing crossword puzzles, sewing, embroidery, knitting, and writing letters. For many years in Orlando, she beautified her neighborhood by collecting trash along a busy road during her daily walk. She was generous, kind, loving, patient and caring, a supportive listener and a loyal friend.
Therese is survived by her husband Raymond and their daughter, Marjorie Morris and husband John, and grand-children, Jennie and Andrew; their son, Michael Nichols and wife Jaci, and grand-children, Chris (Jenn) Roberts, Crystal (Brad) Clearwater, Patrick ( Jessica) Nichols, Shannon (John) O'Dell; and four great-grandsons: Alex and Ryan Roberts, and Blayke and Patrick Clearwater; their son Patrick Nichols, and grand-sons, Zachary and Jacob; and their daughter, Catherine Goodsell and husband Craig, and grand-daughter, Hazel.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 8710 Mount Vernon Highway, Alexandria, VA on November 8 at 11am. Memorials may be sent to Chabot College Nursing Program, 25555 Hesperian Blvd., Hayward, CA 94545, Attn: Scholarship Committee.
