

On February 1, 2025, shortly after reaching her 100th birthday, Vera M. Berg passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she was predeceased in death by her husband of 45 years, Major General William W. Berg.
Vera was born in Trani, Italy and there met her future husband, Bill, a US Air Force officer, during WWII, while she was working for the Red Cross. She began a new life as a military spouse and had 4 children: George (Sandi) Custodi, Walter Berg, Lucy (Ibrahim) Khairy and Caroline Kutil. In 1956, an assignment to the Pentagon brought the family from Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany to Alexandria, Virginia, where Vera lived the rest of her life.
Vera had an amazing eye for beauty, was an impressive seamstress and milliner, creating her own fashions, and ultimately leading her to establish her own boutique, La Donna Fashions, in Old Town Alexandria from 1980 - 1991. In addition to her career in fashion, Vera was an avid cook and gardener expressing her love to family and friends through her delicious Italian cuisine. With her warm personality, magnetic charisma and ready sense of humor, she made friends wherever she went.
She is survived by her four children, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and will be deeply missed. The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to friends and caregivers who so lovingly assisted Vera through the last months of her life, most particularly, Veronica Alburez, for her unwavering devotion, affection and outstanding care.
A memorial service will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church, 2501 Beacon Hill Road, Alexandria, VA 22306, on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. to celebrate Vera’s life. A repast will follow directly after the service in the Bethany Lutheran Fellowship Hall. The burial will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on Thursday, April 3, 2025 at 10:00AM.
