Arlene Mae Berger was born to Charles Nicola and Anna Haiker in the small South Dakota town of Clear Lake. Two sisters, Mary Elaine Nicola Anderson and Janice Nicola Nelson predeceased her. One sister, Carol Nicola Dahl, resides in Minnesota. Arlene married Harris Berger on January 28, 1951.They would have celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary just a six days after the death of Harris Berger on January 22, 2021. They moved to Colorado and to Florida with the Air Force. They settled in Orlando and lived in that community until they moved to the Village on the Green in 1995. Needless to say, they loved Florida.
Arlene had a full-time, long-term career as an executive assistant in the banking and insurance industries. Long before international travel became common for Americans, Arlene and Harris completed remarkable journeys to faraway places such as Africa and India. There were repeat trips to Europe, Scandinavia, and a couple of Christmas Celebrations in the cold of the Rockies in Canada. Golf was a sport they shared. Arlene was a generous Aunt for a multitude of nieces and nephews. Her thoughtful gifts for the Holidays were remembered for years.
Animals were Arlene's passion. She nurtured and loved her Siamese Cat, Ming, who lived over 20 years under her watchful eye. At the Village on the Green, and before, she looked after the hospital therapy/support dogs. Her courage and compassion became evident when she volunteered at a local hospital emergency room in the Orlando area.
Arlene enjoyed watching sports on television, including basketball, golf, and her favorite, NASCAR racing. Both Arlene and Harris loved living at the Village on the Green. Initially, they volunteered for everything, and friendships between residents and staff thrived. In her last years, whenever we spoke, she always praised her life at The Village on the Green and was thankful beyond words.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30, May 23, 2025 at the Longwood Room, Village on the Green.
