Larry Appleton was born in Everett, Massachusetts on May 12, 1933 and left this world on September 22, 2015. Larry lived in Florida for over 50 years and considered himself a transplanted Yankee. He loved his home in Geneva, Florida where he lived with his loving wife, Micki, for 44 years. Their home on Lake Harney was one of his passions and he often said that looking out his kitchen window onto the lake was like medicine to him. He loved the lake, fishing and boating. Both he and Micki enjoyed gardening. Their young children were raised on their mini ranch and have many wonderful memories of this time. Larry served in the United States Coast Guard before moving to Florida and then spent his entire 33 year working career at Martin Marietta. He was responsible for the company’s food service, recreation and travel programs in Orlando and other facilities. The food service program served thousands of employees daily and received many accolades including the company’s highest honor, “The Jefferson Cup.” Larry was deeply dedicated to providing his customers with quality food and service. His creative talents set a new standard for employee feeding and in 1986 he was named the “Best Foodservice Operator in Business and Industry in the United States” and received the food service industry’s highest award, “The Silver Plate”. He served as a director for the Society for Food Service Management. He believed in teamwork and credited his entire staff for their successes. During his tenure Larry also received the national “Most Valuable Promotion Award” and many other honors but his most prized award was given to him by his employees upon his retirement—“The Good Egg Award”. In 1988 he was selected by the United States Air Force to tour and evaluate their best food service programs throughout the world. He traveled as a Brigadier General in the United States, Asia and Europe. His meaningful report recognized the “best of the best” and helped to enhance the overall Air Force food programs. Larry served as President and Director of the Geneva Historical Society. He was a Mason and member of the Orlando Bahia Shrine. He was a Korean War Veteran. Larry leaves behind his beloved wife, Micki, who has been his guiding angel; children, Lee Fedi, Alan Stuart Appleton, Jill Lund, Sandy Appleton, Judith Procell and Scott Appleton along with 10 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
