

He was born in Remsen, Iowa August 13, 1929, and lived in Remsen, Iowa. He graduated from Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa and the University of Iowa Medical School, Iowa City, Iowa. He entered the US Navy on 25 June 1954 as an intern at the Naval Hospital, Jacksonville, FL. His residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology was at the Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, VA. Future assignments were the Naval Hospitals Camp Lejeune, NC; St. Albans, Long Island, NY; Key West, FL and Orlando, FL. He was the chief of OB-GYN Services at Key West and Orlando. He was assigned Director of Clinical Services (Executive Officer) at Orlando 3 January 1977 until his retirement 30 September 1983. He was a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a member of the American Legion Post 183, the Military Officers Association of America, and Phi Rho Sigma Medical Society, Mu Chapter. Since 1968 he was an active member of St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church of Altamonte Springs, FL. He was a Sacristan and Extraordinary Minister of Communion. Due to his work, along with his wife and Sister Joyce Rohlik, the Adult and Child Day Care Centers were developed. He was inducted into the Order of St. Mary Magdalen because of his commitment to the church. In 1996, he and his wife, Helen, were inducted to the Bishop Moore Catholic Church High School Athletic Hall of Fame for their work as Hornet boosters.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Helen. He is survived by eight children: Mary (Richard) Furman, Louisville, KY; Steven (Jan) Schefstad, Johns Creek, GA; Jean (Jim) Guerrette, Altamonte Springs, FL; Julia (David) Mansfield, Altamonte Springs, FL; Theresa Schefstad, St. Pete Beach, FL; Anthony (Carol ) Schefstad, Altamonte Springs, FL; Linda Schefstad, Casselberry, FL; Michael (Sonja) Schefstad, Altamonte Springs, FL; Twelve grandchildren; twenty-three great grandchildren and a sister, Jo Ann Means, Marcus, Iowa.
Visitation for family and friends will be held at Baldwin Fairchild Funeral Home, 994 East Altamonte, Altamonte Springs, FL 32701 from 5-7 pm with the rosary preceding at 4:30 pm on Thursday, April 20, 2023. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 am on Friday, April 21, 2023 at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, 861 Maitland Ave, Altamonte Springs, FL 32701. For those unable to attend, the service streamed at www.stmarymagdalen.org. Interment with military honors will be held at 2:30 pm at Highland Memory Gardens, 3329 E Semoran Blvd, Apopka, FL 32703.
