

Audrey L. Simpson , 94 of Hurst, Texas passed away March 2, 2014. Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at Memorial Park Cemetery by Memorial Park Funeral Home, 6969 I-40 East. A. L. Simpson was one of 8 children. Raised during the depression years, he excelled in track and basketball, and was recruited to play football at Sul Ross State Teachers College. He chose instead to enlist in the Navy, serving in the South Pacific during WW II, and was involved in a number of well-known naval battles, rising to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Upon discharge, he became a fireman, first for the City of Amarillo and later for the US Air Force at Strategic Air Command bases. He retired in 1976. He lost his first wife, Arlis, to cancer in 1978. He remarried in 1984 to his second wife Mae, who also preceded him in death. He was in relatively good health, and loved painting and music. He was a member in good standing of Messiah Baptist Church in North Richland Hills, TX, where he sang in the choir. He walked a mile or more every day that weather permitted until the last week of his life. He was preceded in death by his brothers Claude, John, Homer, Bill, and Sisters Mattie, Thelma, and Twin Sister Cordie. First wife, Arlis, Second Wife Mae. Survivors include stepson Johnny Pulliam & wife Karen of Stratford, TX; son, Dr. Greg Simpson & wife Marilyn of Hurst, TX; daughter, Lisa Burke of Roanoke, TX; grandson, Jeff Simpson & wife Vanessa of New Braunfels, TX; granddaughters, Kari Mitchell of Pasadena, TX, Kristi Pflumacher & husband Mark of Thomosboro, IL and Kathy McBride of Rantoul, IL; great-grandsons, Hunter Mitchell of Pasadena, TX, Ty Mitchell of Pasadena, TX and Owen McBride of Rantoul, IL; and great-granddaughters, Abigale Simpson of New Braunfels, TX and Kendall Simpson of New Braunfels, TX. In lieu of flowers, Audrey wished that contributions be made instead to the Gideons International, which can be done on-line.
