Doris Jean Simmons Burns, beloved mother, grandmother, and cherished friend, passed away on February 4, 2025, in Amarillo, Texas, at the age of 90. Born in Oklahoma, she often remarked that she made her way to Texas as soon as she realized where she was meant to be. Doris grew up in Wellington, Texas, and her faith journey began in high school when she was saved and baptized into the Baptist church, a commitment she upheld throughout her life.A devoted servant of her church community, Doris taught children's Sunday school for many years until the age of 80 and was actively involved in mission work. Her love for the Lord shone brightly in all she did, and her infectious sense of humor brought joy to those around her.Doris was the eldest of four siblings and was married for 52 wonderful years to Norval Burns, whom she met on a blind date. Together, they shared a love for travel, often exploring the beautiful landscapes of the Western United States, and even embarking on an adventurous trip to Canada, humorously budgeting $300 for the journey, assuring their daughter they would return when the funds ran out! An accomplished seamstress and avid quilter, Doris poured her creativity and passion into her crafts, sharing her talents with family and friends. She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Nelson; her two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews who will forever cherish her memory.
