

Gary Lee Choate, 78, of Amarillo, passed away on December 26, 2024. He was born in Amarillo, Texas, to Gene and Jerry Choate on January 14, 1946. His arrival brought great joy to his family, especially his older sister, Donna Jean, who was eagerly awaiting her new baby brother.Gary graduated from Tascosa High School in 1964, where he distinguished himself as a talented football player and excelled in shot put and discus as a member of the track team. Following high school, he honorably served in the United States Army from 1964 to 1968, earning several commendations, including the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Sharp Shooter Rifle Medal. He was also recognized as an Honor Graduate from his advanced individual training class.After his service, Gary embarked on a successful career as a semi-truck driver, dedicating over 30 years to companies such as ICX and Consolidated Freight, from which he retired in December 2000.In 1971, Gary met Catherine, the love of his life. After dating for eight years, they married in 1980. Together, they built a beautiful life filled with love and family. Gary had a passion for boating and cherished spending weekends at Lake Meredith with his family. He was also an avid woodworker, known for taking family heirlooms and transforming them into breathtaking works of art.
Gary is survived by his beloved wife, Catherine Joanne Choate; two daughters, Amy Crawford and her husband Randy, and Cris Gonzales and her husband Vince; five grandsons; four great-granddaughters; three great-grandsons; his nephew, John Priolo and his wife Cathy; his niece, Robin Mullins and her husband Ronnie; and Kellie Luetkahans and her husband Kevin, along with nine great-nieces and five great-nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Gene and Jerry Choate and one sister; Donna Jean Alexander.
Gary Lee Choate will be remembered for his strong spirit, love for his family, and the many lives he touched throughout his journey. He leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and dedication to those he cherished.
