Joe was born on December 19, 1938 in Sadler, Texas. After graduating from Ropes High School in
Ropesville, Texas, he moved to Amarillo where he met the love of his life, Delores Dunn on a blind
date at the Tri State County Fair. They were married from December 22,1959 until her death on
November 26, 2005.
Joe worked in the food industry for 40 years in various capacities. He never met a stranger and loved
his job in sales since it allowed him to visit with people all day. Joe was an avid football fan and
cheered on the Dallas Cowboys. He loved airplanes and cars, and took his family on many hikes in
Palo Duro Canyon. Joe and Delores cherished the dogs they had over the years, including Cuddles,
Bertha, Tooter, Bouncer, Boots and Corky.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Lillian Mayo; his wife, Delores, and son Johnny
Lynn; his brother Billy Mayo and his two sisters Imogene Young and Cathy Edwards.
Survivors include his aunt Mary Hall; his daughter Jean Sims and son Jeff Mayo; nephews Cliff Mayo and
Wesley Edwards and three nieces Jan Petrie, Kay Shelby and Kari Edwards; his sister-in-law Madaline
Dunn and nephews Deral and Dwayne Dunn; many grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and his
friends at Independence Village.
