Lelia Belle Garner was born on May 1, 1920 to Arthur and Clara Cowan in Decherd, Tennessee. She married George D. Garner on June 1, 1946 and settled with him in Amarillo in 1958 after a transfer to Amarillo Air Force Base.
Belle enjoyed a wide range of hobbies and crafts—from cooking to ceramics to league bowling—but the center of her world was always her family. She loved music and served for many years as the pianist at Tenth Avenue United Methodist Church, where she was a devoted member.
Belle was preceded in death by her parents, her five siblings, her husband and their infant son, Randy. She is survived by her son David and his wife Linda; her grandchildren Shannon, Todd, Scott and Jennifer; her step-grandchildren Kathy, Melissa and Nicole; seven great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren, and one step-great-great-grandchild.
Belle's steadfastness and discipline in all aspects of her life were matched only by her loving kindness. Even late in life, adoring and adored, she touched the lives of those around her as the quintessential image of the perfect grandma. She will be deeply missed.
The family suggests memorials be made to Faith City Mission or the High Plains Food Bank. The family would also like to express gratitude to the caregivers and staff at Brookdale Sleepy Hollow and Encompass Health for the kindness and care shown to Belle during her final days.
