

Lloyd H. “Butch” Cogburn, 91 of Amarillo passed from this earth on February 12, 2026 surrounded by his family. He was born In Throckmorton, Texas on November 1, 1934 to Quince Homer & Alma Corine Cogburn. He graduated from Woodson High School with the class of 1953. He graduated from Ranger Junior College in 1955, playing basketball for the Ranger Rebels. He finished his education at Midwestern University in Wichita Falls while playing basketball.
He married Lorena Juanell Peacock on August 3, 1956. They met on the school bus in elementary school. They moved to Shamrock in 1962 and began a refrigeration company partnership with his cousin, Douglas Robertson. He later purchased Aubrey’s Dairy Freeze, a popular hangout spot on the drag in Shamrock. Later, he purchased the Maverick Restaurant that was a local favorite.
Several years later, he opened Butch’s Restaurant on Interstate 40. During his career in the restaurant business, he enjoyed catering the annual St. Patrick’s Banquet for many years. He was Kid-Letics President for eight years, the Shamrock Country Club President for 20 years. He also enjoyed serving on the Shamrock City Council, and the local Jaycees Club and he was a member of the Shamrock 1st Baptist Church. He was once the winner of the first annual “St. Patrick’s Championship Domino Tournament” . In the early years, he played men’s softball. You could find him often at the Corner Drug Store hashing out world problems with his group of favorites
He left Shamrock in 2014 and moved into The Country Estates retirement community and quickly became a popular host for many porch discussions and continued hashing out the problems of the world.
He is preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, two brothers and his loving wife, Juanell of 58 years.
He is survived by his two sons, Ray Cogburn and wife Jackie of Amarillo, Texas, Gary Cogburn and wife Joy of Belton, Texas, and a daughter Julie Winters and husband Russ of Amarillo, Texas, Four grandchildren, Kinsey Phelps and husband Ches of Lubbock, Kendall Cogburn and wife Kelly of Amarillo, Courtney Ratheal and husband Dustin of Austin, Weston Cogburn of Dallas, and six great grandchildren. He leaves behind a host of old friends in Shamrock and new friends in Amarillo.
Visitation will be held Saturday February 14, 2026 from 4:00 to 5:00 PM at Griggs Schooler Gordon Funeral Directors in Amarillo. Visitation will then be held Sunday February 15, 2026 at Robertson Funeral Home in Shamrock from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. Graveside services will be held in Shamrock cemetery on Monday February 16, 2026 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Shamrock Country Club.
