Sarah Jane McCoy Gray passed away Monday evening, March 11, 2024, surrounded by her loving husband of 60 years, John Cameron Gray, Sr, her son, John Cameron Gray, Jr., and daughter DeAnna Lynn Gray. All of Amarillo, Texas.
Sarah was born to Benjamin Franklin and Mary Alma McCoy in Philippi, West Virginia, April 18, 1947. The youngest of 12 children, she was raised in Grafton, West Virginia with a large family of siblings and cousins. She graduated from Grafton High School with the class of 1965. It was during high school that she met her husband, John. They were married in Mountain Lake Park Maryland on May 16,1964.
Shortly after they were married John and Sarah moved their young family from West Virginia to Virginia, Texas, New Mexico and finally settling in Amarillo, Texas in November 1973 where they remain today.
Sarah took pride in her family and was blessed to be able to stay home with her children until her love of medicine lead her to employment with Texas Tech Health Science Center. After retiring from Texas Tech she then began a second career, working with Dr. Randy Hines, MD, in his family medicine medical practice until her final retirement in 2007.
When Sarah walked into a room you couldn’t help but smile. People will always remember her for her contagious laugh. She loved spending time with her family, cross stitch, ceramics and traveling around the world and across the US to visit family and friends.
Sarah is preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin Franklin & Mary Alma McCoy. Brothers Ralph, Sidney, Joseph, James and Larry. Sisters, Henrietta, Josephine and Kate.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, John Cameron Gray, Sr. ,Son John Cameron Gray, Jr and his wife Melanie and daughter DeAnna Lynn Gray, all of Amarillo, Texas. Also her brother, John Thomas Michael McCoy and Sisters Ruth Hackney and Helen Constance Lawver. Sarah has 6 grandchildren and 2 Great grandchildren: Steffani Cross, her husband Adam and great grandson Eli of Lubbock, Texas, MSgt Steven Boling, his wife Saaya and great granddaughter Chisato of Aurora, Colorado, Michael Gray and his wife Shelby of Amarillo, Texas, Christian Boling and his partner Corrina of Seattle, Washington, Ashley Qualls of Amarillo, Texas and Brianna Graf also of Amarillo, Texas. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A virtual memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 19th, 2024 at 9:30 Central time. If interested in joining please email [email protected] for a an invitation that will contain a link. Interment will be at Bluemont Cemetery in Grafton, West Virginia at a time to be determined.
Family suggests memorial be sent to Ussery Roan Veterans' Home in or donations to BSA Hospice of the Southwest, both located in Amarillo, Texas.
