Phil Jenkins was born March 27, 1935 in Cherokee, Iowa. Phil is the baby of the 12 children of Charles "Charlie" Jenkins and Mary Edna "May" Jenkins. Phil is survived by his sister Katherine, brother Joe. He has 2 sons, Richard and Tom and 2 daughters Jody and Brenda. Phil has 9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Phil grew up in a large, warm, loving and lively family. He liked school and was very good at it. He loved playing baseball as a catcher. Phil met Nancy Fossage and they married in 1953. They had 4 children. They moved to Redwood Falls Minnesota, where the first "Jenkins Market" was started with his brothers. Soon afterwards he made the big move to California, along with his brothers to start the "Jenkins Market" chain. They also moved mom & dad (Charlie & May) out to California.
Phil was a hard worker. Spending many hours at the grocery store to support his family. Times starting changes for Phils' family and his family. Soon after that, that the kids were getting older and the family was going in different directions.
A new door opened for Phil, he went to work with "Ron Day". It was a meat packing business. Ron was one of Phil's best friends. Phil had another great friend "Jack Mummert" longtime friends since grade school.
Phil loved sports. He loved baseball, the race track, football and all the college games. He would love to go to bed and listen to the games on his small hand radio. He loved to read and of course the sports page.
Phil retired and moved into the "Jenkins Family" home in Cypress with his brother Ronnie. October 2008 Tonnie became ill and Phil started taking care of him. Phil recalls the "big guy" that would come to the house and help him take care of Ronnie. Phil was a loving and thoughtful brother. Ronnie passed away on January 6, 2011.
Phil loved his puppy "Darby" that was his companion. Phil LOVED giving "Darby" treats. After Ronnie's passing, Phil wasnt's the one to go out much. He would go to the store, doctor's and run his errands, but he was perfectly happy to stay at home. The family would come to visit him. He did like to go out to eat. Phil would get plenty of giggles when Ron Day would drive over to visit him his "Rolls Royce". He LOVED to tell us kids stories of all the fun/trouble he would get in with his brothers and his friends Jack & Ron. He loves to talk about his sisters, mom and dad too.
January 2013 Phil's grandson Cody moved in with him. He really enjoyed that. In summer 2014, Phil's health started to decline. He was going to the doctors more. On Monday, November 24, Phil was not feeling well and we took him to the emergency room at Los Alamitos Medical Center. They put him in CCU. His Kidneys were failing. Thanksgiving he took a turn. He had his loved ones by his side. On November 28, 2014 at 1:15 am, Phil went home to be with the Lord. No more pain, no more suffering.
Sometimes he was a little gruff and "rough around the edges", but he was a good man. Phil was a kind and loving father, son, brother, uncle and friend. He will truly be missed. May you rest in peace and in the arms of the LORD. WE LOVE you and we will see you again in heaven. God bless you!
