Denny Bernholtz, 47, passed away Sunday, May 13, 2018, in his residential town of Slater, Iowa. A visitation will be from 4-7p.m., with a vigil service at 7p.m., Wednesday, May 23, 2018, at Ankeny Funeral Home (1510 W. First St. Ankeny, IA 50023). Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00a.m., Thursday, May 24, at Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Church (510 E. First St. Ankeny, IA 50021), and will be officiated by Fr. Steve Orr. A burial service will follow at 3:30 p.m., at the Carroll Cemetery in Carroll, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established to purchase benches along various bike trails in central Iowa in memory of Denny.
Denny was born in Carroll, Iowa, on June 7th 1970 to Merle and Loretta (Sailer) Bernholtz. As an accomplished building official and one of few Master Code Professionals in the state of Iowa, Denny owned and operated Safe Building Compliance and Technology, where he performed building inspections for multiple cities and government organizations in Iowa. When Denny was not working, he enjoyed pheasant and deer hunting and was an avid bike rider when the weather permitted.
Denny is survived by his mother, Loretta Bernholtz of Carroll, his three children; Jacob, Sailer, and Karsten and their mother, Michelle (Naughton), his six siblings; Kenny (Carmen) of Spirit Lake, Ron (Debb) of Carroll, Karen (Ron) Frazee of West Des Moines, John (Mickey) of Denison, Dave (Becky) of Mitchellville and Chad (Cathy) Bernholtz of Kansas City, MO, and 14 nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father Merle Bernholtz, grandparents; Frank and Anna Sailer, and John and Hulda Bernholtz.
