

Emma Irene Zuehl Fischer, youngest daughter of Fred Otto & Clara Recena Isabelle Fillenwarth Zuehl, was born December 8, 1917 in Britt, Iowa. She attended High School and Jr. College in Britt, taught at a rural school then went to Western Union College in LeMars, Iowa where she graduated in 1940. While at college she met Ellis Fischer, they were united in marriage on June 25, 1941. They celebrated 64 years of marriage before he passed away in July of 2005. Through the years they lived in several Iowa towns – Otho, Harcourt, West Bend, Rake and Ayrshire before moving to Ankeny in 1960.Having raised her family, Emma went to work in the State Agricultural Lab. in DesMoines as a chemist and microscopist. . She enjoyed gardening, sewing, reading and following high school and collegiate sports. Although she had many hobbies and interests, Emma treasured family and friends above all else.
Emma died on May 24, 2010 at Sunny View Care Center at the age of 92 years 5 months.
Emma is preceded in death by her husband, Ellis; sisters Esther and Naomi; brother, LeRoy; and granddaughter, Emily. She is survived by her children, Hope Brattmiller (Jim) of Spirit Lake, Arnie (Marcia) of Ankeny, Margaret Strautman (Rip) of Spokane WA, and Elaine Brazelton (Jim) of Ankeny. Emma is also survived by five grandchildren, Chris Fischer, Lynn Messick (Steve), David Brattmiller, Lona Pelong (Bob), and Holly Brazelton; and six great grandchildren, Emma, Olivia, and Sam Fischer, Kayla Messick, and Ella and Avery Pelong.
Visitation will be 5 to 7 PM, Wednesday, June 2, at Ankeny First United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, June 3, 2010 at Ankeny First United Methodist Church, of which she was a member. Burial will be at Ankeny Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to the Ankeny First United Methodist Church.
