Memorial services for Kay and Bob Schweers will be on Friday, February 28, 2025 at Ankeny First United Methodist Church, 206 SW Walnut Street. A visitation will be held from 1-3 p.m., with a service at 3 p.m., and reception to follow. Bob and Kay did everything together, for as long as they were able, and it is fitting they completed their earthly journey together as well.
Kay was born March 18, 1946 in Burlington, IA, to Charles and Elaine Norris. She graduated from Burlington High School in 1964, and in 1967 married Robert Schweers. They had two sons, Rob (Maria) of Ankeny, IA, and Eric (Elizabeth) of Belleville, MI.
Kay held many jobs during her lifetime, including service as bookkeeper at First United Church of Christ in Burlington, executive secretary at Area Education Agency #16, and later at Des Moines Area Community College after moving to Ankeny in 2004. She was highly sought after as a typist of doctoral dissertations, where even one mistake meant you had to rip out the page and start over.
But more than anything, Kay was a great wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, daughter, and friend. She took great pride in providing more for her sons than they deserved and was extremely proud of the accomplishments of her grandchildren.
Kay had a great sense of humor and loved music of all kinds – from classical to show tunes to Willie Nelson – but her favorite was always Tony Bennett. She was also a voracious reader, taking in at least one book each week, and recorded the daily Wordle to ensure she didn’t suggest a word that had already been used.
In retirement, Kay enjoyed the theater, traveling, genealogy, playing games with friends, and watching the grandchildren’s activities. She was also active at Ankeny First United Methodist Church and took on her friends and neighbors in bocce and shuffleboard at the Ankeny Senior Center. Kay was chastised by her sons more than once for diving during chair volleyball.
Kay is survived by her husband and sons; four grandchildren, Nate (Lyndsay) Schweers and Anna Schweers of Ankeny, Courtney (Stephen) Roach of Cincinnati, OH, and Andy Schweers of Chicago; and three great grandchildren, Georgia and Lennyn Schweers of Ankeny, and Eliana Roach of Cincinnati. She is also survived by a sister, Nan (Don) Nelson of Broken Arrow, OK, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Kay was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Ned (Judy) Norris of Folsom CA.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ankeny First United Methodist Church, Families Forward in Des Moines, or the Alzheimer’s Association – Iowa Chapter.
