She was born on April 19, 1944, in Davenport, Iowa, to her beloved parents, Milo “Mike” and Whyla Karkosh. Marcia grew up in Cedar Rapids graduating from St. Patrick’s High School in 1962. She went on to attend the University of Northern Iowa, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Library Science and her Masters in Educational Media. During her college years she met the love of her life, Paul Lemke. Their bond quickly grew into a lifelong partnership, and they were married on July 4, 1974, a date Paul chose so they would always have fireworks to celebrate their anniversary.
Marcia dedicated much of her life to learning, literacy, and nurturing others. She worked as a Media Specialist for the Area Education Agency, where she cultivated a deep love for books and reading. She built a cherished collection of children’s literature, including many books personally signed by authors she met at conventions.
She was an active member of her quilting guild and a devoted member of Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart. Marcia found joy in embroidery, quilting, and sewing, often creating beautiful handmade pieces that will be treasured for generations.
After retiring, Marcia and Paul embraced their shared love of travel, spending up to ten months a year exploring the country. Special trips to Wisconsin Dells created many family memories and traditions.
Marcia will be remembered as a woman who was always present for those she loved—caring, dependable, and kind. She was a loyal friend to many and someone who consistently put the needs of others before her own. Her warmth, generosity, and gentle spirit touched countless lives.
A life so beautifully lived leaves a lasting legacy. Marcia Ann Lemke will be remembered always, and her light will continue to shine in the hearts of all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Milo “Mike” Karkosh and Whyla Karkosh (Kokesh); her husband, Paul Lemke; her sister, Kathy Temeyer; and her aunt Maude Holm.
She will be missed by her brother, Roy (Diane) Karkosh; her sons, Michael Lemke and Matthew (Lisa) Lemke; and her grandchildren DaniRae (David) Ristau and Michael Carter.
