Martha was born on September 26, 1946, in Waterloo, IA. Her family moved to Des Plaines, IL in 1951 where she grew up along with her two sisters Sue and Margie, and married Jim Hoffmann, also of Des Plaines, in 1969. In Des Plaines, they raised two boys, Dave who married Deb Chalmers, and Rich who is married to Shelby Quam. Dave and Deb have three wonderful girls: Jade, Amber, and Crystal. Rich and Shelby are parents of four wonderful girls: Kinleigh, Kaelynn, Kaydee, and Paige. Jim and Martha moved to Ankeny, IA in 2015 where they lived until her death.
Martha had a storied job history. She worked at G.C. Murphy’s, and Brown’s Department Store. This is where she met Jim when he was borrowing money from his mother 😊 She was a Department Head at Sear's where she enjoyed serving people. At Procon, she was a “temporary employee” but was specifically requested every day. She mastered her next job, which would have been overwhelming for any other, with Dave, Rich, and Jim as a mother and wife extraordinaire. As the kids became independent she was asked to do party planning at Casa Royale Banquets. When Jim became principal in School District 62, she also began to work there as a library clerk and then Administrative Secretary. Finally, she returned to her most favorite role as a mother and wife, now adding her absolute pleasure of being a grandmother. She is easily remembered for her energy and smile which lit up a room, her ability to deflect attention from herself, asking questions because she really cared, and her memory for the answers which always made others feel special. She was a member of the PEO Sisterhood as were her mother, sister, and niece. She missed several years of attending PEO meetings, but in recent years was happily back to enjoying the sisterhood, thanks to Zoom meetings. She was also one of the “Bees”, a group of seven young mothers at church which has lasted a lifetime.
Martha maintained many friends from Illinois and made many new friends in Iowa. She was always available to help others, be a good friend to all, and a best friend of many.
