Maxine Kay Christensen

Maxine was called home to be with her Savior on August 20, 2019. As she continued to walk with her Lord in her last difficult months she spoke of the amazing joy that she was assured she would experience worshipping her Savior face to face.

Maxine was born April 6, 1941 in Topeka, Kansas. Her family moved to Ankeny in 1955 where her father opened the Ankeny Red E Mix Plant.

Maxine graduated from Ankeny High School in 1959. In 1964 she married Jon Christensen. They had one son, Shawn Damon. In 1982 Maxine became a certified addictions counselor. She was blessed to do this for 25 years. She also trained other counselors and enjoyed hearing from them as they advanced in their careers. Maxine also was a conference and seminar presenter and especially enjoyed the time after the sessions to visit with attendees. After her retirement she continued to consult and counsel at various churches.

Maxine was preceded in death by her Mother, Florene; father, Cleo and sister, Kathryn (Wayne) Abuhl. She is survived by her son, Shawn; sister, Cleo Sondra Fuqua; sister, Jolene (Jack) Gordon and brother Chris Fuqua. Along with many nieces and nephews.

Maxine enjoyed Bible studies, choir, work projects and the opportunity to share her faith with others. She was a faithful prayer partner for many friends. Her life verse was Jeremiah 29:11 and was blessed to see how the Lord would always meet her needs and guide her through difficult circumstances. One of her favorite hymns was “I Must Tell Jesus”. She attended Prairie Ridge Church in Ankeny.

Maxine became a member of the Blue Star Mothers of American when her son joined the army in 2010. It was a blessing to work alongside other mothers with children in the military. She also served as chaplain and recording secretary in the group.

When at the age of 62 Maxine became a certified scuba diver with her son Shawn. They enjoyed diving in Jamaica and many other countries and large lakes in the U.S. She also accomplished piano lessons at the age of 67 given by her niece Judy and completed target shooting classes.
