Anne L. Spendlove

Anne L. Spendlove passed away peacefully on February 10, 2012 at the Glacier Hills Retirement Community of Ann Arbor, MI where she had resided for the last 9 years. Anne was born August 22, 1920, in Saginaw , MI , the only daughter of Benjamin G. and Persis (Loeffler) Wacker. With her father being a court administrator and her mother a schoolteacher, Anne developed a love of learning and a lifelong appreciation of higher education. Anne graduated from Saginaw Arthur Hill High School , class of 1938, and obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Alma College in 1942. While at Alma , she met Herbert W. (Herb) Spendlove whom she married in 1943 in Dearborn , MI , where she was teaching elementary school. Herb served in the Army Air Corps in England during WWII. After the war, the couple returned to Saginaw, where Herb had been hired by the Saginaw News. Anne left teaching, and devoted her time to raising the couple's two children, Jon and Caro. In 1962, Herb was transferred to Jackson , MI as Editor of the Jackson Citizen Patriot. Anne continued in her role as mother, while also enjoying her love of the game of bridge, a budding interest in golf and a particular insight into the stock market. Anne and Herb made their final move to Ann Arbor, in 1977, after Herb was named Editor of the Ann Arbor News. Anne and Herb enjoyed 52 years of marriage. They traveled the world together, saw their children grow, graduate from college, marry and have children of their own. Anne also had the unique opportunity to meet Jackie Kennedy in the White House, have tea with Lady Bird Johnson, and be in the audience when Herb rose to ask Richard Nixon a question during a press conference at the time of the Watergate scandal. Anne was a devoted wife, and a loving mother and grandmother. Anne truly loved her time at Glacier Hills during her final years. She enjoyed its activities and particularly its staff. In turn, she was very much loved by the people who cared for her, for which her family will always be grateful. Anne is survived by her children, Jon J. (Betsy) Spendlove of Novi, MI and Caro A. (Kurt) Mabbitt of Spring Lake, MI. Also by her grandchildren, Robert C. (Melodee) Mabbitt of Flint, MI, Anne W. Mabbitt of Grand Rapids, MI, Jonathan G. Spendlove of Novi, MI , Robyn L. (Charles) Lee of Springfield, VA, Jennifer A. (Dale) Barbour of Raleigh, NC, and her great granddaughter, Danielle Lee. At Anne's request, and following cremation, a family memorial service will be held at a later time at the Richland Township Cemetery in Hemlock, MI.
