Corrine was an amazing woman who led a full life. She was born on the east side of Detroit on March 21, 1934, to Gwendolyn and Stanley Snyder. She grew up in Detroit and graduated from Dominican High School in 1952. She later graduated from Siena Heights College with a B.A. in English Literature and taught elementary school at St. Raymond’s Parish and the City of East Detroit (Eastpointe). On a Friday evening in 1962 after a long week of teaching, Corrine accompanied a friend to a party in downtown Detroit where she met the love of her life, Robert Joseph Grace, a rising trial lawyer in the U.S. Attorney’s Office. On June 29, 1963, Bob and Corrine married at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Detroit. Corrine paused teaching to raise a family as Bob eventually became the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan.
In 1970, when Bob’s term ended, they moved to Ann Arbor where Corrine lived for 54 years. Corrine had an active social life and devoted her time to numerous charitable organizations including The Ann Arbor Coterie Club, St. Mary’s Women of the Heart, Girl Scout and Cub Scout leadership, President of the St. Francis Parent Teacher Guild, running Gabriel Richard Stadium Cleanup, organizing the Junior Great Books Program and spending countless hours tutoring at risk children in reading. In 1980 she returned to teaching and was a favorite teacher for hundreds of students at Northside Elementary School until retiring in 2008. While balancing a full-time teaching career and raising her family, Corrine earned her master’s degree in Elementary Education from Eastern Michigan University. Sadly, Bob died in 2002. While she missed him tremendously, she spent the next two decades staying active and living life to the fullest. Her Catholic faith nurtured her soul and was incredibly important to her. Corrine was devoted to her grandchildren and family, and loved nothing more than spending time with them. She traveled to Europe, the Caribbean, the Pacific Northwest and northern Michigan. Well into her 80’s, she kept her mind and body active in many ways, including walking, practicing yoga, reading and participating in book clubs. A lifelong card player, she played a fierce game of gin rummy and rarely lost a hand to her children and grandchildren.
Corrine is preceded in death by her husband Bob, her parents Gwendolyn and Stanley Snyder and her brother Jerry. Corrine is survived by her five children Robert Grace Jr. (Jennifer) of Tampa, Florida, Molly Peck (Lawrence) of Ann Arbor, Michael Grace (Kelly) of Sammamish, Washington, Brigid Loftus (William) of Atlanta, Georgia and Kevin Grace of Saline, Michigan. Corrine was affectionately known as “Gigi” by her 10 grandchildren, Robert Grace III, Caroline Grace, Lauren Peck, Lindsay Peck, Aidan Grace, Ryan Grace, Rachel Grace, Jack Loftus, Catherine Loftus, and Caroline “Liney” Loftus. She loved them dearly and was immensely proud of them, never missing a birthday, first communion, graduation or celebration. Corrine is also survived by her beloved dog, Buddy who was her constant companion in her final years.
The Grace family wishes to acknowledge and thank the compassionate and dedicated team at StoryPoint of Saline and CorsoCare Hospice for the incredible kindness and care they gave to our mother and Gigi.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in her memory may be made to Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist: (The Dominican Sisters of Adrian) or St. Mary Student Parish: (St. Mary's Student Parish)
