Daisy T. Wu passed away peacefully on January 8, 2015 at her Ann Arbor, MI home after a long, hard fought battle with cancer. Her life was filled with professional accomplishments, colorful adventures, and deeply loving relationships.
She began studying library science as an undergraduate foreign student on full scholarship. She retired from libraries in 1998 as the Head of the Science and the Engineering Libraries at the University of Michigan.
But her greatest work was being the wife of Prof. Shien-Ming (Sam) Wu. For 33 years, Daisy was Sam’s biggest fan, most trusted advisor, and dearest love. Of the hundreds of students and scholars that Sam mentored, all remember Sam with respect--and Daisy with love.
After Sam’s tragic death in 1992, Daisy continued to “mother” the members of Sam’s research group and carry on the traditions of holiday parties and graduation celebrations. She was always available to advise and comfort, and served as a role model for many with her philanthropic activities, determined to make a positive impact.
Even after being diagnosed with cancer, she continued to travel, train competitively for ballroom dance, and keep an active schedule with the S. M. Wu Foundation and other charities focused on making the world a more just and beautiful place.
Her natural elegance, lively intelligence, gentle wisdom, and endless generosity will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
Daisy is survived by her sister Betty Wei, daughter Elaine (George Georges), granddaughters Samantha and Miranda, nephew Su Tsui and wife Min Gao, and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank Dr. Carolyn Johnston and her team at the University of Michigan Hospital for their exceptional care. In lieu of floral tributes, the family suggests that memorials be made to the Shien-Ming Wu Foundation, 415 Riverview Drive, Ann Arbor, MI 48104
