Donald Michael Merke passed away on Thursday, January 26, 2023, at home in Chelsea MI. He was 86. Born in Dearborn, MI to William and Jean Merke, he attended the University of Detroit and was a member of the Army Reserve. After marrying the love of his life, Gwen, they moved to Ann Arbor to start a family. It was there they opened The Cracked Crab restaurant in 1971, which quickly became a celebrated local landmark and gathering spot for over 20 years.
In addition to relishing life with wife, daughters, and beloved pets, Don took heart in many activities, including cooking (especially barbecue), literature and music, fresh and saltwater fishing, hunting, restoring wooden boats, building giant bon-fires, and being anywhere on or near the water.
Don is survived by Gwen, devoted wife of 58 years, and dedicated daughters, Nicole (William) Fortenberry, Tonya, Natasha Hunter; grandchildren (Mackenzie, Emma, Katlyn, Colette); brothers, William (Jill), Gerald (Katherine, dec.), Michael; and niece (Michelle McQuaid). A service will be held at St. Mary Student Parish in Ann Arbor on Saturday February 4th at 11 AM. If desired, family and friends may make a memorial contribution to the Michigan Alzheimer’s Disease Center Research Fund.
