

George Hiram Grimes passed away peacefully on January 2, 2015 after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Born in Detroit to George Frederick Grimes and Vera Stoutenburgh Grimes Supplee, he graduated from Pershing High School and earned three degrees from Wayne State University (a bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate in education) and a second master’s from State University of New York, Geneseo. George’s career accomplishments included: Director, Curriculum Laboratories, Detroit Public Schools; Project Director, Michigan-Ohio Regional Educational Laboratory; and Director, Professional Resource Center Network, Wayne County Intermediate School District. He concluded his career as a professor of Learning Resources and Technologies at Eastern Michigan University, a job he retired from in 2000.
George authored a book and countless articles and studies in professional journals and publications. He served as a leader and member of numerous professional and civic boards and committees throughout his life. His interests included a love for jazz, travel, writing, reading, cultural events and spending time with friends and family. Survived by his partner of 37 years, Olga Moir; three daughters, Beth Thompson (Jeff) and Laurel Horman (Jim) of Grand Rapids, and Kathryn Grimes (Bob Breck) of St. Paul, MN; by his former wife, Marlene Babb of Chesterfield; five grandchildren; and two stepchildren, John Moir (Tanisha) of Southfield and Robin Moir (Kevin Henninger) of Roseville, MN. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, Jan. 17, at 2:30 in the atrium at Huron Woods, an assisted living home on the campus of St Joseph Mercy Hospital, 5361 McAuley Drive, Ypsilanti, MI 48197.
