Irene was born in Bolton England on March 16, 1922 and immigrated to the United States in December of that year. Her family moved to Moline, Illinois where she met her husband, Dallas Jones, in high school. They were married on June 6, 1942 and honeymooned in Colorado, just prior to Dallas being shipped overseas to serve in the European Theater.
After the war, Irene supported the family while her husband completed his schooling at Augustana and Cornell Universities. From New York they moved to Colorado for two years before permanently locating in Ann Arbor in 1955. Although never able to complete college, she audited classes in her two favorite subjects German and Art History at the University of Michigan.
She and her husband traveled extensively around the world and she loved spending the winters in Florida. Raising her children, Sandra and Michael was a primary focus of her life along with providing a good home for her husband. For leisure, she loved swimming, playing tennis and entertaining friends.
