

Irwin, Martha Ellen Ann Arbor, Michigan Martha Ellen Irwin, age 84, passed away on Monday, June 8, 2015 in St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Martha was born April 24, 1931 to Rollind and Zelma Irwin in Holland, Ohio. She is survived by nephews Larry "Butch" (Dawn) Irwin and Terry Irwin. Great nieces and nephews are Erica, Dustin, Jamie, Niki, Taylor, and Brooke Irwin. Two great-great nephews are Gavin and Colton Irwin. Surviving cousins are Wes (Phyl) Vesey, Robert (Sonja) Irwin, David (Nancy) Irwin, Glenn (Emily) Irwin, and Gladys Warda. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother and wife Larry and Eleanor Irwin. Martha graduated from Springfield High School in 1949. She had a bachelor and master's degrees from Bowling Green State University and a doctorate degree from Western Reserve University. All her degrees were in the field of education. Her career in teaching included Springfield and Adams Townships in the Toledo area, before joining the Eastern Michigan University Staff in Ypsilanti, Michigan, in 1964. She was an exchange teacher at Coventry College in England in 1976-77. She spent two summers in Swaziland filling in for the long term Eastern Michigan University person assigned to the reading curriculum. Throughout her life, Martha was a talented musician having served a number of churches as organist. She also was an accomplished accordion player. Following her retirement at Eastern Michigan University, Martha elected to move to the Brecon Village Community in Saline, Michigan. Cremation has taken place and a private interment service will be held at the First United Methodist Church Memory Gardens in Ann Arbor.
