

Megan Karl Schutt of Ann Arbor, MI passed away on January 1, 2016 following a diagnosis of colon cancer earlier this summer. Megan was born in Lake Forest, IL, daughter of Mike and Mary Beth (Upton) Karl and sister to Lisa (Karl) Jones. She grew up in Saginaw, MI and attended Eastern Michigan University before moving to Ann Arbor to attend University of Michigan for her MSW.
In her professional life, Megan was a committed mental health clinician, serving those with Borderline Personality Disorder in Washtenaw County at CSTS. In recent years, Megan attained her Ph.d in Social Work at the University of Pennsylvania, her research and teaching focused on Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. She had begun a position as Assistant Professor at Madonna University in the Fall of 2015.
In her personal life, Megan cherished family, friendship, laughter and travel. Her love of adventure and willingness to challenge herself led her to Philadelphia for graduate school where she spent three years exploring the city and all the University of Pennsylvania had to offer. Megan was remarkable in her ability to move through obstacles with grace, including a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in 1999 and the loss of both of her parents in 2010, throughout which she was strengthen by her deep relationship with her sister Lisa and Aunt Barb. Her positive attitude, ability to persevere, sense of humor and commitment to loving relationships are attributes that will remain with her friends and family.
Megan is preceded in death by her beloved parents, Mike and Mary Beth (Upton) Karl, and is survived by Paul Schutt and their son Oliver, her sister Lisa (Karl) Jones, brother-in-law Keith Jones, nephew Nick and niece Chloe, Aunt Barb (Upton) and Uncle Jim Karl.
Services to celebrate Megan’s life will be held on Wednesday, January 6 at Muehlig Funeral Chapel, Ann Arbor, MI. Visitation will be held from 3-5pm and again from 6-7pm with the memorial service from 7-8pm.
