Michael Robert Moore died on May 11, 2025. He suffered cardiac arrest while running, an activity he had loved his whole life. He was 70 years old. Michael was born on September 13, 1954 in Pueblo, Colorado, where he grew up. He received a BA in Economics from the University of Colorado in 1977 and a PhD in Natural Resource Economics from the University of Michigan in 1986.
Michael was a Professor of Environmental Economics at the University of Michigan’s School for Environment and Sustainability since 1996. His research in water resource economics, environmental markets, climate change and sustainable land use left a lasting mark on the field. Michael was known not only for his intellect and scholarly contributions, but also for his kindness and warmth, his thoughtful guidance, and genuine care for students and colleagues alike. He had an unforgettable smile for everyone he met, whether he knew them well or not.
Michael shared his love of sports and travel with his wife, Ellen, and his friends and family. He embraced an active life, biking to work almost every day, playing basketball and golf, and skiing and running through the end of his life. He was a longtime Michigan basketball season ticket holder and loved watching his sons play soccer. He enjoyed regular trips to Colorado to visit his family, and was at his happiest when exploring the great outdoors. His adventures took him to many parts of the world, including Nepal, Patagonia, Morocco, South Africa, Europe, the Galapagos Islands, U.S. national parks, and many other special places in between. Michael developed deep friendships in all corners of his life, including his neighbors, colleagues, “Over the Hill” basketball group, and golf partners.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Virginia Moore. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Ellen Brody of Ann Arbor, Michigan; his sons Eric Brody-Moore of Nashville, Tennessee and Peter Brody-Moore of Denver, Colorado; his sister Lisa Moore of Pueblo, Colorado and brother Steven Moore (Martha Griffin) of Crested Butte, Colorado; niece Lindsay Moore of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and nephews Andrew Moore (Lacey Hudgins and their daughter Esme Rose), of Portland, Oregon; and Rio Moore of Bozeman, Montana.
There will be a Celebration of Life in the fall, with additional details to come. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the “Michael R. Moore Fellowship Fund for Environmental Economics and Policy” to honor his teaching legacy at the School for Environment and Sustainability. (Link Below)
