Roger Alan Merkle, affectionately known as “Dude,” passed away peacefully at home in Ann Arbor, Michigan, at the age of 82. Born on June 13, 1942, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, he was the beloved son of the late Harold and Beatrice Merkle.
Roger earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Michigan State University before beginning a long and successful career at Ford Motor Company, where he worked as a Systems Analyst. Following his retirement, he continued consulting within the automotive industry—an opportunity that took him to several countries overseas and allowed him to explore the world in new ways.
In his earlier years, Roger enjoyed coaching youth hockey and mentoring young athletes. He found great joy in music, watching beach volleyball and surf events, and spending time at his beloved cottage in Tawas—a peaceful retreat he helped build with his father. The cottage served as the family’s cherished summer vacation home for decades—a place where countless memories were made, filled with sun-soaked afternoons, shared meals, and meaningful time together across generations.
Roger also cherished traveling with his late wife, Karina, especially to tropical destinations. Together, they found joy in exploring new cultures and creating a warm, inviting home that reflected the beauty of their journeys. In later years, he found deep contentment in the simple pleasures of life—long walks outdoors with his dogs, Cassie and Lexi, and staying closely connected to the lives and accomplishments of his children and grandchildren.
Roger and Karina were known for their generous spirit, always ensuring their family experienced joyful holidays, heartfelt traditions, and a beautiful life filled with comfort, care, and love. Their legacy of giving and togetherness will be cherished for generations.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Karina Merkle. He is survived by his three children: Cynthia Noland (and her husband Dana), Tanya Merkle (and her partner Corey Williams), and Christopher Merkle (and his wife Amy). He was a proud grandfather to Ashley Noland (and her partner Drew Parrish), Eric Noland, Sydney Merkle (and her fiancé Gary Douglas), and Benjamin Merkle.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 19th, at Muehlig Funeral Chapel in Ann Arbor. Visitation for family and friends will begin at 11:00 AM, followed by a service at 12:00 PM to honor Roger’s life and legacy.
Roger will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his deep love for family, and the many beautiful ways he shaped the lives around him.
