I knew Stephen only from Hatcher North, but he was so much a part of life here it's nearly impossible to imagine it without him. He was one of the good parts, it goes without saying.  I have two humble contributions to include, emails so funny and joy-giving I copied them from another coworker years ago and saved them as precious library memorabilia.  They're a small enough insight into his obviously fantastic mind, but I think they're worth sharing, because they'll make everyone else as happy as they made me.  

I don't know you, Pat, but my heart goes out to you.

Subject: Beware Banana Phantom

There have been five reported instances in the past eleven days of full banana peels being found early in the morning by housekeeping staff on marble stairs and around blind corners above stairwells in the olde North Stacks of the Graduate Library.

This creates a very real danger of slipping, and indeed two housekeepers have fallen prey to villain unknown.

Staff should tread carefully in the early hours, lest they too slip and succumb to injury; at least until the fiend ceases, is apprehended, or moves on to another haunt.

Staff should also report any suspicious behavior, e.g. disfigured patrons banned for violating our no food policy, unattended monkeys, or anybody slipping into the many secret passages leading to the sewers and steam tunnels below.

Normally beyond what I see as the scope of this list; I felt the need to mention the recent recovery of a piece of silver jewelry in what I would characterize as a rather staff oriented area of Hatcher Library.

The item is available at North Circulation for return to anybody who can describe it.

In the event of no claims the item will be recast as shot, to help deal with the rising costs associated with werewolf abatement.

Stephen and I didn't work a great deal together, but it was always good to cross paths with him.  His laugh was infectious.  My condolences to the family.

I will remember Stephen as kind, funny, intelligent, creative and  big-hearted.  He was an integral part of our own, much more realistic version of the Brady Bunch, sharing many irreverant, happy and meaningful moments.  Sympathy goes out to Andy, Bill, Pat, Karen and all who, like me, miss and are saddened by his passing.

I am very saddened by Stephen's death. I was his father's last wife for 20 years and Stephen was always very kind to me. After Bill's death, he kept in touch. We shared many thoughts about his father.  Stephen had a brilliant intellect and wit.  The world is sadder for his untimely loss.

Stephen's untimely departure is a deeply felt loss to all who knew him. My deepest condolences to Pat, Karen, Andy, and all who loved him and feel his loss keenly. As our parents worked closely together, and my brother Eric and I were of like ages to the Hipkiss boys, I had the good fortune of having known Stephen and Andy from earliest childhood. Never at a loss for brilliant insight or wit, the loss of Stephen is a great loss to us all. He will be missed.

I've known and admired Stephen since kindergarten, if not before.  He had a wicked sharp intellect and a great sense of humor.  Long may he be remembered.  Long will he be missed.

Words can't express how much I am saddened and will miss Steve. The world has lost a great person with an amazing sense of humor. I have only fond memories from college and smile when I think about him. My sincere sympathies to Pat and the family.

Stephen even in High School you loved  a great debate and enjoyed pushing us to see issues from many different views. Thinking of you family during this difficult time.

I'm very saddened to learn of the loss of Stephen.  I worked for his father, Bill, for many years and got to watch Stephen and Andy grow up into fine young men.  My thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.

Although I haven't seen Steve in many years I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing.   I grew up about three streets over from Steve and have memories of him going back to elementary school.  His intelligence and sense of humor were second to none.  I'll remember him forever.  R.I.P. Steve.

Andy: my sympathies to your family. I have fond memories of Steve and his infectious laugh and keen wit. He will be missed.

My heart goes out to you at this time. Although I knew you already, I didn't meet Stephen until I went to work at Hatcher. What a friendly, sweet, capable, helpful guy! He filled up a room with his boisterous personality. It's true what they say: Your many wonderful memories will provide more balance to the sorrow, as time goes on.

My condolences to his family and friends.  Stephen will be missed, and it wasn't until this spring that I had the opportunity to meet him face to face as I had staff at N. Hatcher during a flood situation.  Prior to that it had always been email correspondence for work orders.

Sorry to hear of Steve's passing. Always had fun playing paintball beside him. He will be missed. Peace to him and the Hipkiss family.

I got to know Stephen on the Campus Safety and Security council and came to appreciate his knowledge and wisdom. I will miss his presence there. My thoughts are with his close family and friends.

I always appreciated both working and joking with Stephen in the Library, and running into him at Ashley's occasionally after work.  I was also shocked and saddened to hear he was gone.  Deepest sympathies to his family.

Stephen was not only a great boss, he was a wonderful person.  As with everyone else, I was shocked to hear of his passing.  I will miss seeing Stephen on campus and chatting about U of M politics!  Please accept my most sincere and heart felt condolences.

May the love of friends and family carry you through your grief.

I will miss Stephen so much. It just will never be the same in the basement of Hatcher; no music or movie discussions, no sharing mutual aggravation about a certain morning DJ. I will miss his huge heart, great wit, and never-ending support.

Pat, you have been on my mind & heart daily this past week. Helen O & Marti both forwarded me your Northside email. I always enjoyed Stephen's presence at Northside events & found him to have a tender & kind spirit beneath a belovedly gruff exterior. The obituary is touching, delightful. Do know I will be in contact soon.

I was very saddened and shocked when I read of Steves passing. My thoughts and prayers are with Steves family and to Patricia whom I had the pleasure to meet one time and all of his friends. Steve will be missed by many people around the University campus. Steve was a caring and  kind man who I worked with when I had calls at Hatcher Library.   Steve had no problem letting you know his expectations when there was a job to be done. 
Steve you were a good friend, I will miss you alot.

I am shocked and so saddened to read of Stephen's death.  My sympathy to his family, my love to Patricia.  My very fond memories of him are strong in my heart.

Stephen was the best friend to me when I most needed one.  His friendship saved my life.

Steve was such an amazing guy. I count it a privilege that I could shoot next to him on the paintball field, chat with him late into the night, game with him...he was one of the most generous and intriguing guys I've ever met. The lessons I learned from him will stick with me forever. RIP Steve - you're already missed.

I have known Stephen for a long time, we played paintball, discussed military history, and the University of Michigan and always found him willing to take a few minutes of his day to chat.  He will be missed. My prayers go out to his family and friends.
