Steu is survived by his wife of 31 years, Lucy, and by his brother-in law Ken (Milly) Kuszynski, his sister-in-law Sharon (Dave) Kopp, and his nieces and nephews Paula (Bill) Wright, Brian (Mandy) Kuszynski, and Kara (Brian) Wilson, and by numerous cousins in Texas, Wisconsin, and across the US. He is preceded in death by his parents Hugh Clifford White and Billie Doris White (nee Hayes), and by his brother Jeffrey Starnes White.
Steu was born on September 9, 1948 in Detroit, Michigan. He graduated from Kent State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1971. He proudly served in the US Army from 1971 to 1975 and he had very fond memories of his time as a liaison officer to the German Luftwaffe in Lansburg. Upon honorable discharge, he moved to Ann Arbor where he worked as an optician at Stadium Opticians until his retirement in 2001.
Steu had three great passions: bicycling, cross-country skiing, and ceramics. He was an active member of both the Ann Arbor Bicycle Touring Society and the Washtenaw Ski Touring Club for about forty years. For the past five years, Steu was an enthusiastic and prolific student at Clay Work Studio, under the excellent tutelage of Yiu Keung Lee. He also enjoyed ice skating, hiking, travel and camping, target sports and hunting, and British murder mysteries on the BBC.
Steu was devoted to his wife, his friends, and his community. He was always eager to help, generous with his time, and delighted in organizing bicycling and skiing events. He reveled in telling stories to an appreciative (or captive) audience. And Steu was prompt to a fault; if he was not fifteen minutes early, he thought he was late. Cremation has taken place.
