Dr. Subhas C. Mullick, age 77, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2012 in Ann Arbor, Michigan surrounded by his loving son and daughter-in-law after a valiant fight with congestive heart failure. "Subi", as he was known by colleagues and friends, was born in Ghorakhpur, India on January 23, 1936, son of the late Keshab Nath and Sushma Mullick. In 1958, after graduating from King George's Medical College in Lucknow, India, he married junior classmate, Swadesh Jawa. In 1960, they emigrated by ship to London to pursue their individual specialities training and start a family.
In 1968, after earning his Fellowship at the Royal College of Surgeons (London), he and his wife continued their journey across the globe to Boston, MA to pursue a second fellowship training under renowned vascular surgeon, Dr. Francis Moore, at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital at Harvard University. Professional opportunities encouraged him and his wife to establish their family in New England and not follow their original plan to return to India. In 1972, he opened a private practice in General and Vascular Surgery in Lawrence, MA associated with Holy Family Hospital and Lawrence General Hospital of the Merrimack Valley.
In 1976, he was recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons; he served as Chief of Surgery at Lawrence General Hospital in the 1980's; and he became known as an innovative leader in the medical community after establishing the Holy Family Breast Care Center and the Lawrence General Trauma Center. After many years of dedicated service to his patients and colleagues, he retired in the late 1990's.
When not working, Dr. Mullick was traveling with his family, enjoying a fine restaurant, or gazing out at the sunset on Lake Winnipesaukee. He is survived by his four brothers and two sisters; former wife, Dr. Swadesh Mullick; three children; and six grandchildren: Shoki and Melissa Mullick, Andrew (12) of Ann Arbor, MI; Ani and Alicia Mullick, Dylan (6) of Boston, MA; and Scott and Monica Stallings, William (9), Amelia (7), Claire Elise (4), and Samuel (2) of New Canaan, CT.
The viewing will begin at 11am on Saturday, August 4th followed by the funeral service at 1pm at Muehlig Funeral Chapel, 403 S. Fourth Ave., Ann Arbor, MI 48104. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be sent to the Subhas Mullick Foundation (www.mullickfoundation.com), P.O. Box 24, Hartland, MI 48353.
