Born on July 15, 1947, Andy was raised in Silver Spring, Maryland, and graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art with a Masters in Fine Arts. In March 1972, she met her soulmate, Michael Smull, and they married that October, residing in Kensington, Maryland. Andy was a creative powerhouse and an entrepreneur. In 1975, she opened her first retail store, Smulls Gallery Gifts, in Dupont Circle, Washington, DC. For more than 40 years, Andy owned and operated many popular retail businesses, each one a reflection of her bold style and vibrant personality. She was a beloved and constant figure in the communities that she served.
In 1997, Andy and Michael purchased their dream waterfront property on Harness Creek in Annapolis, Maryland, and built their forever home. Not surprisingly, it would later be named Metropolitan Home Magazine’s “Home of the Year.” Andy loved entertaining friends and family, spending endless hours boating with Michael on the Chesapeake Bay, and watching beautiful sunrises over the water.
In 2010, Andy combined her love of dogs and coffee with her retail roots, opening the award-winning store Mutt + Joe in Severna Park, Maryland. The store quickly became a popular community gathering place, and Andy was a fixture in the shop for many years, until she retired in 2023.
Andy’s boisterous laugh, boundless energy, and generous spirit defined her. She was a fiercely loyal and dedicated friend, an exceptional baker, a talented photographer, a first mate to Michael on their boating adventures, and the ultimate “Dog Mama.”
A celebration of life will take place later this summer on Harness Creek. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Maryland SPCA (www.mdspca.org). The family would like to thank Andy’s close friends, Kimberly Youngchild and Lori Thomas, for their endless love, care, and support.
