Anna Cecilia Hagner, Yiayia, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, faith, and devotion to family that will be cherished for generations.
Born Anna Cecilia Lewnes on March 1, 1927, in Annapolis, Maryland, she was the youngest child of Greek immigrants Sam and Cecelia (Vassilia Mandris) Lewnes of Arna, Laconia, Greece. Raised in Eastport, Anna grew up in her family’s well-known restaurants where she learned the values of hard work, hospitality, and family.
She married the love of her life, Elmer Hagner, sharing a devoted marriage grounded in faith, family, and partnership. Elmer, a World War II veteran, served as Chief of the Anne Arundel County Police Department from 1964 to 1969 and later served four terms in the Maryland House of Delegates. Together they built a home in Annapolis and raised their two children, Darryl Ryan Hagner and Barbara Lynn Hagner .
Though deeply rooted in Annapolis, Anna’s favorite place was the cabin she shared with Elmer in Parsons, West Virginia. There she found joy in family, nature, and especially watching her beloved hummingbirds. A proud member of the Greek Orthodox community, she remained deeply connected to her heritage, traditions, and extended Lewnes family.
Yiayia was the true matriarch and the unbreakable glue of her close-knit family. She never missed a birthday or special occasion and made every grandchild and great-grandchild feel loved and remembered. Christmas morning at her home was a treasured tradition where the entire family gathered without exception. Known as a gifted storyteller, she was a constant source of wisdom, strength, humor, and unconditional love.
She loved the Baltimore Ravens and Orioles, enjoyed golfing well into her later years, and adored her beloved dog, Sparky. Above all, her greatest joy was her family.
She is predeceased by her beloved husband, Elmer Hagner (2004); her daughter, Barbara; her daughter-in-law, Judy; her parents, Sam and Cecelia Lewnes; and her siblings, George, Deno, Lou, and Nick.
