Carole Elizabeth Sullivan was born on January 14, 1942 in Washington, D.C. to Nellie Bowers. The youngest of 7 children, she was adored by her sisters and brothers. Carole spent her entire school career in Washington D.C., graduating from Calvin Coolidge High School in 1960. After graduation, she worked at Woolworth's Department Store where she met her future husband, whom she married in 1961. Carole became a devoted wife and mother to her daughter and son. Her marriage later dissolved, but she remained friends with her ex-husband for the rest of her life.
She enjoyed a career in administration at GE, but her love of music and singing led to her becoming a beloved cantor at St. Peter's Church. One of her dearest accomplishments was singing Handel's Messiah at Carnegie Hall with the Annapolis Chorale. Even though she had a strong aversion to flying, she overcame her fears and took 2 wonderful trips to Italy and France, even managing to take a much coveted picture of the Pope which she turned into her favorite Christmas card! Carole reveled in planning parties and special occasions, and she was always quick with a funny story or quip to make everyone smile. But never mind about all of that...
Her greatest love was her children and grandchildren. Always proud of every accomplishment, award, and achievement, she was the biggest supporter that her family could ever want. Carole was a bright star in the lives of all those she met, and her passion for life and generosity of spirit will be missed by many.
Carole is survived by her daughter Robin Sullivan Malloy (married to Bob Malloy) of Alexandria, VA and son Patrick Sullivan (married to Robin Parker) of Ellicott City, MD; 2 grandchildren, Liam Malloy and Lily Malloy of Alexandria, VA; three brothers, Tom Bowers of FL, Jack Bowers of NM, and Ed Bowers of FL; nephew Lynn Reese of Silver Spring, MD, and niece Dana (Pie) Melville of Tucson, AZ, who were more like siblings than nephew and niece; and ex-husband Charles Sullivan of Fredericksburg, VA . She was predeceased by her 3 sisters: Claire Reese, Bette Panich, and June Bowers.
Visitation will be held on Sunday December 22, from 3pm to 6pm at the John M. Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St. in Annapolis, MD. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 am on December 23 at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 5319 Ocean Gateway in Queenstown, MD. Interment will be immediately following in the adjoining cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Carole's memory can be made to liveartsmaryland.org so that all who loved music as Carole did may benefit.
