Eleanor Sophie Bembe Williams, born on October 9, 1922, was a kind-hearted and glamorous woman. She was always busy fussing around to make sure that everyone was tended to and happy. Up through her 98th birthday this year, she conducted herself with style and poise. Eleanor passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by family, on the evening of December 16, 2020.
Eleanor was the daughter of Charles and Lillian Bembe. She is survived by her three sons, Carl Williams and wife Linda, Michael Williams and wife Elizabeth, and Wayne Williams; her grandchildren, Chad Williams, Kelly Williams, Kristy Wright, and Jeffrey Williams; and her great-grandchildren, Aylin Black, Austin Black, Reese Black, Jolene Wright, Memphis Williams, Vivian Wright, and Riley Ann Williams. She was preceded in death by her husband Donald Williams, who passed away in the year 2003. Donald and Eleanor were married for almost fifty-nine years, living in Bembe Beach in Annapolis.
Eleanor was a lifetime member of St. Martins Evangelical Lutheran Church. She was also a member of the Ladies of the Elks #622. She worked at the Gas and Electric for ten years. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, whether it was cooking her famous mashed potatoes for family dinners, taking family beach vacations, or travelling with friends worldwide. She could often be found bowling with the Colonial Retirees or having lunch and playing cards with friends. She also enjoyed embroidery.
Eleanor has always been associated among her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with chocolate chip cookies. She always had a tin full of cookies ready whenever they stopped by. This earned her the affectionate name as “Cookie Grandma.”
Eleanor has served as the matriarch of the Williams family. She will be missed but the memories that she created throughout her life will never be forgotten.
A private burial has taken place at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Memorials in her name to Saint Martin’s Evangelical Lutheran Church 1120 Spa Road Annapolis, Maryland 21403 will be appreciated.
