Born February 24,1935 to Lida and Samuel Sabel, Jean grew up in Annapolis, MD and attended Annapolis High School and the Fleet Business School. Jean met her husband Martin Lee Howes through mutual friends and married in 1958. Settling in Eastport, Jean was a homemaker, a devoted mother to three daughters and caregiver for her mother-in-law. She volunteered as a classroom mom, girl scout leader and member of the PTA. Once her youngest daughter entered high school, Jean went to work at Sears as a Sales Associate in 1980 until her retirement in 2000.
As a devout Christian her entire life, she enjoyed going to church, participating in bible study, and volunteering on many committees. Jean was loved by many and never met anyone she didn't know. We joked that we could never go anywhere without someone recognizing her. She was affectionately known as "Moo" to her daughters and their childhood friends and now to her great grandchildren. Jean's favorite pastimes were listening to Christian and country music, dancing, stamping homemade greeting cards, cross stitching and especially playing the card game Rummy 500.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and daughter Susan Beyerlein. She is survived by her sister Phyllis Phipps of Edgewater, brother Ken Sabel (Deborah) of Arnold, two daughters: Linda Philipp (Scott) of Annapolis, Marsha Ensor (Doug) of Severna Park, five grandchildren: Schelley Roessler (Kevin) of Calabash, NC, Rick Beyerlein (Charlene) of Arnold, Ryan Beyerlein (Samantha) of Richmond, VA, Jaimie Mitchell (Joe) of Arnold and Sami Philipp as well as seven great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at Hillcrest Cemetery 1911 Forest Drive Annapolis, Maryland 21401 in Annapolis on Saturday August 31, 2024 at 10:00 am.
