Born to Jessie Mae Walker and Leroy McHenry, Pat grew up in Baltimore and graduated from Friends School. Shortly thereafter, she married C. Edward Hartman, II and moved to Annapolis, where she and Ed raised four children: Debbie Gosselin, Carolyn Sutch, the late Cathy Hartman, and Edward Hartman, III. She was an active sailor and volunteer, president of the Old Town Garden Club, as well as other organizations, while continuing to work as a legal secretary at the law firm of Hartman and Crain.
Upon divorce from Ed Hartman, Pat married Richard Chew Zantzinger, Jr and began a new life in Southern Maryland. She and Dickie raised tobacco, grain, and pigs on the 600-acre waterfront farm in Mt. Victoria, Maryland known as West Hatton. In the late 1980s, Pat and Dickie set off to sail around the world, only to be shipwrecked off the west coast jungle of Costa Rica. Undeterred, after purchasing another sailboat, she and Dickie set off again for the adventure of a lifetime, sailing around the world for 4 years, interrupted only by the untimely passing of Pat’s third daughter Cathy in 1992. Pat became one of the first female members of the Storm-Trysail Club, reserved for those who experienced ocean voyages of great length.
Shortly thereafter, Dickie passed away, and Pat resumed life in Annapolis, near her family, first continuing to live on her sailboat. She later moved into her home in West Annapolis and married local attorney L. Vernon Miller, Jr. Pat and Vernon later moved to Ginger Cove, where Vernon continues to live.
Pat leaves behind a loving family of three children and six grandchildren: Sarah Russell, Ginny Mininger, Lily Clayman, Lena Sutch, Edward Hartman, IV, and Christian Hartman, and four step-children: Richard C. Zantzinger, III, Kyle Zantzinger, Ann Miller Kaye, and Bruce Miller. In addition, she was blessed with seven great-grandchildren with another on the way.
Pat will be missed by her family and many friends throughout Annapolis. Visitation will be at Taylor Funeral Home on Duke of Gloucester St, Monday, October 11, 2021, 2-4pm and 6-8pm. A service will be held at St. Anne’s on Friday, October 22, at 1:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake.
