Sandy was born on July 17, 1948 in Annapolis, MD, the daughter of Sidney and Eleanor Robinson. She attended St. Mary’s Elementary and High School and graduated from Annapolis High School in 1966. Sandy met her husband, William Gosnell Paine, Jr, on a blind date on October 2, 1966. They were married at the Naval Academy Chapel on May 17, 1969.
A lifelong Annapolitan, her tenure in Annapolis was broken up with adventures around the world following her husband and his Navy career. The Navy took them from Pearl Harbor, HI to Newport, RI and many points in between. They settled back in Annapolis in 1985 to raise their family.
Sandy loved being a wife, mother, and grandmother. She was the consummate sports mom and shuttled the kids between soccer, field hockey, and lacrosse practices and loudly cheered during all of their games. When she became a grandmother in 2012, she threw herself wholeheartedly into this new role. She was also a beloved Sponsor Mom to many midshipmen that she and Bill began sponsoring with the Class of 1989.
An active member in the Naval Academy Spouse’s Club, she loved volunteering with the Chapel Guild and being a “Pusher” for Chapel weddings. She ensured that every wedding went as scheduled and each couple had a perfect wedding day. She also volunteered for many years at St. Mary’s Elementary becoming an indispensable helper for many teachers. As most people would be retiring, Sandy began working at the Naval Academy Midshipmen Store. She loved interacting with all the midshipmen and alumni and became a surrogate mom to many.
Sandy is survived by her husband of 55 years, William Gosnell Paine, Jr., her children Anne “Robin” Mazurek (Brent) and William Gosnell Paine, III (Emily), and her grandchildren Jameson Pierce and Marian Amelia Mazurek.
A memorial mass for Sandra will be held Thursday, May 1, 2025 at 10:30 AM at Saint John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 Bestgate Rd, Annapolis, Maryland. Interment private.
