

William R. McAteer (Bill), age 92, of Annapolis, MD passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on March 6, 2023. He was born in 1930 in Birkenhead, England to Michael & Beatrice McAteer. He was awarded a scholarship and attended the private boy’s school, Park High. He made lifelong friendships while riding for the Birkenhead Cycling Club. He continued to ride with some of these friends into his 70’s. After graduating from school, he served in the British Army the following two years. Bill became a decorated cyclist for the Army winning many long distance races throughout Europe.
He married Beryl Mitchell, also of Birkenhead, on July 9, 1955. In 1957, he immigrated to the United States, first residing in New York City where he worked as a draftsman during construction of the Time Life building. He then moved to Northern Virginia and eventually settled in McLean, VA. He founded and operated successful electrical contracting and steel businesses for many years which included Continental Electrical Contractors and Continental Steel here in the US, as well as Cheshire Steel Fabrications Limited in England. The family moved to Annapolis, MD in 1976 and this is where Bill fulfilled his love and passion for sailing as a life member of the Annapolis Yacht Club. He enjoyed sailboat racing in Annapolis and around the world on his numerous boats named “Immigrant.”
He is preceded in death by his daughter Susan McAteer and survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Beryl McAteer, as well as his sons Michael McAteer (wife Provi) and Marc McAteer (wife Karen). He is the loving grandfather to David McAteer (wife Felicia), Madelyn McAteer & Molly McAteer.
Funeral services will be held on Friday March 24, 2023 at St. John Newman Catholic Church at 9:00 AM with burial after the service at Lakemont Memorial Gardens in Davidsonville, MD. Seaman, yachtsmen and other good friends around the world are invited to toast to this one of a kind accomplished and beloved man.
