

William Frederick Morgan, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, died January 15. He was born August 25, 1935, the son of Frederick Hastings Morgan and Lola Hammond Morgan. He graduated from North Fulton High School and was a graduate of Emory University where he was president of the Chi Phi Fraternity, a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa Society and the Senior Society. After Emory, he became a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force where he was stationed in Normandy, France for three years. During his tour of duty, he returned to Atlanta in May of 1958 to marry Carroll Litsinger Morgan, his college sweetheart. After the Air Force, he entered Harvard Business School in 1960 where he received an MBA and was named a George F. Baker Scholar in 1962.
After working in New York City at the Benton and Bowles advertising firm, he returned to Atlanta to join the Morgan Flour Company, a business started by his father. In 1966, he became president of the company and served in active business until 1989.
In semi-retirement, he served in a number of volunteer positions with the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta, especially in the area of community poverty ministries. He also served as Chairman of Episcopal Charities Foundation and for several years as a teacher and mentor to a small group of fine young men known as the “Lost Boys of the Sudan.”
He and his family were longtime members of Saint Dunstan’s Episcopal Church, where he served as senior warden. He also wrote a musical Christmas pageant that was performed there for several years. He and Carroll later became active members of the Cathedral of Saint Philip. In Atlanta, they also enjoyed membership at the Commerce Club.
In 2010, he, Carroll and two dogs moved to Annapolis, Maryland to be closer to family. There they joined Saint Margaret’s Church where he was a lay reader and served on the grants committee. He also enjoyed membership at the Annapolitan Club.
He was pre-deceased by his parents and his son, William Tyler Morgan. In addition to his wife of 66 years, he is survived by his daughter Elizabeth Morgan Reid (Jim), and two granddaughters, Margaret Fogarty (Gibbs) and Caroline Terwilliger (Sean), and two great grandchildren, Reid and Tyler Fogarty.
The memorial service will be February 1 at 2 p.m. at Saint Margaret’s Church, 1601 Pleasant Plains Road, Annapolis, Maryland. A reception will follow. Details will be shared at the service.
The graveside service will be in Atlanta on February 8 at 11 a.m. at Arlington Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends are welcome, and a small reception will follow at the Whitely Hotel.
