A visitation will be held on Sunday, June 22, 2025, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Anniston, Alabama, followed by a private graveside service for family at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Anniston.
Dale was born on October 30, 1939, in Muscadine, Alabama, to the late Aubrey and Elma Whitley. He was raised in Muscadine and DeArmanville, later settling in Anniston, where he lived the remainder of his life.
A 1957 graduate of Oxford High School and a graduate of Jacksonville State University, Dale eventually went on to earn an Ed.S. in education. He dedicated over 30 years of his life to teaching chemistry, physics, and basic science at Saks High School, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students.
He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Carolyn Wade Whitley; daughters Kelly Whitley Williams (Brad) and Gwen Whitley Patton; son-in-law Quincy Pope (Meri); and grandchildren Quinton Pope, Rachel Whitley Brown (Trey), Aubrey Pope Campbell (Dillon), Macie Ruth Williams, Bryce Patton, Karis Patton, and Austin Sutherlin.
Dale is also survived by his siblings: Anita Whitley Hedgepath (Kenneth), Charles Whitley (Gloria), Roy Whitley (Shelba), and Ken Whitley; sister-in-law Evelyn Wade; and many loving nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jennifer Whitley Pope; his parents, Aubrey and Elma Whitley; his sister, LaNelle Whitley Willingham; and his brother, Lee O’Neal Whitley.
Dale was a man of intellect, curiosity, and quiet strength. He enjoyed spending time outdoors—fishing, tending to his vegetable garden, and keeping honeybees. He was a lifelong learner and enjoyed sharing his knowledge with others. Because of his desire to learn, he had a passion for reading and could often be found tinkering with electronics, repairing broken items, working on cars, and helping those in need.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Alabama Baptist Children’s Home and Family Ministries.
