

Hazel Carolyn Garrett was born 4th of 10 children to Davis Garland and
Gertrude Ware Garrett in Kilmichael, MS, on February 26, 1924. The family lived the majority of their lives in Greenville, MS. Following high school, Hazel moved to Camp Blanding, FL, to work as a civil servant with her sister, Louise. There she met U.S. Army then 1LT Thomas (Tom) Ray Harbin. They were married in Augusta, GA, on October 23, 1943. MAJ (Ret) Harbin served with the 3rd Army in WW II and the Korean Conflict. Among others, assignments took the couple to Japan where their oldest child, Thomas Ronald, was born; to Fort Jackson, SC, where their second child, Helen Ann was born, and to St. Johann, Austria, where their third child, Gilda Carolyn was born, and then to Munich, Germany. The family then moved to Atlanta, GA, where
MAJ Harbin retired from Ft. McPherson, GA. Tom and Hazel raised their family in Atlanta. Following MAJ (Ret) Harbin's death in 1974, Hazel moved back to Greenville, MS, to live near many of her 8 sisters and their families. In 2009 she moved to Rainbow City, AL, where she lived at Regency Pointe Retirement Complex until her death.
Hazel was loved, inspired, and admired by all who knew her. She took great pride in being selected as Miss Greenville as a teen and competing in the Miss Mississippi Pageant. Hazel was a beautiful lady. She was a wonderful, devoted, loving, and caring wife and mother, sister and grandmother. She was extremely active in her church and community. She served as Sunday School teacher, PTA president, Women's Civitan, and Retired Officer' organizations. She was very active in her children's' school activities. Perhaps her greatest achievement was assuring her entire family came to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Hazel was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greenville, MS, and currently a member of First Baptist Church of Saks in Anniston, AL
Hazel had a matchless spirit and spunk for life and lived it to the fullest. She was involved in all activities at Regency Pointe and until her death, was an avid Bridge and Mahjongg player. She truly loved life.
Hazel is survived by her 3 children, Ron Harbin, Helen Ann Harbin (Rick Scrovanek), and Gilda Knighton (Larry); 2 grandchildren, Shannon Perry and Thomas Harbin (Stephany); 4 great grandchildren, Davis and Annabelle Looper and Hunter and Haley a Harbin; 4 step grandchildren, and 4 step great grandchildren; 1 sister, Margie Mayers (Bill), and 25 nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband MAJ (Ret) Tom Harbin; parents Davis and Gertrude Garrett, 7 sisters, Jewell Hess, Louise Lee Magers, Pauline Newton Thornton, Mary Davis Satchfield Nesbit, Annie Grace Riley, Betty Jo Wilson, and Ruth Williams; 1 brother, Dr. Davis Garrett, daughter-in-law Marilyn Harbin, and 1 niece and 2 nephew.
Arrangements are as follows: Visitation 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. Funeral service at 2 p.m., both at Chapel Hill Funeral Home on Friday, May 20, 2016. A private burial will be at Forestlawn Gardens in
Atlanta, GA.
