On Sunday, July 6, 2025, James Kenneth Fulmer passed away at the age of 81. James was born on September 3, 1943, to Benjamin Frank Fulmer and Reavy Ovell Shurbett in Anniston, Alabama. He had two brothers, Charles, George “Bill,” and 4 sisters: Norma (Steward), Yvonne (Brooks), Lanelle Fulmer, and Linda (Allgood). On February 16, 1963, he married the love of his life, Shirley Jean Fulmer, and had two children, Tina and Dennis. He joined the Marine Corps in 1961 and proudly served his country until 1965. He received a degree from Jacksonville State University and then worked for the State of Alabama Department of Revenue until his retirement.
The most important things to him in his life were God, the church, and his family. James was a humble, quiet, loving Christian man who had many nicknames – Jim, Jake, Kenneth, Ken and best of all “Da.” He was beloved by his family and friends and was a faithful and loving husband to his wife Shirley. He was a great example of what it really means to love God and love others. He served as an elder at the Conyers Church of Christ for 30 years, but he never stopped serving the church and the Lord. He loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was often seen with several great-grandchildren and his dog on his lap. If any family member or friend needed him, he would drop everything and drive for hours to come to help. He was loved by many close friends in Conyers, and they never failed to check on him or take him out to dinner. He showed us how to love others and to live the Christian life.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Jean (Burnett), his father, Frank, and mother, Ovell, and his brothers, Charles and Bill. He is survived by his sisters and his two children, Tina (Kevin) Lee, and Dennis (Jill) Fulmer, as well as his grandchildren, Robin (Peter) Nelson, Krista (Dalton) Edgeman, and Avery Coles. Isabella and Raven Edgeman, and David and Addison Nelson were his great-grandchildren. He also had many other nieces and nephews.
There will be visitation on Monday, July 14, 2025 from 5pm to 7pm (Central Time) at the Gray-Brown Funeral Home, 1329 Wilmer Avenue, Anniston, Alabama. The graveside service will be Tuesday, July 15, 2025 at 11am (Central Time) at Forestlawn Gardens, 730 Golden Springs Road, Anniston, Alabama.
